外婆的珍寶

Before the days of Internet, email, Viber and Line, I always look forward to letters from my grandmother. She is a prolific writer. Each letter is well thought out, carefully composed and beautifully hand written. Because of that, her letters are enjoyable to read, memorable and carry me through all the good and the bad times. They are my constant source of inspiration when I am in different parts of the world.

I enjoy reading and re-reading her letters. Her words resonate differently in each stage of my life. This is a testament of her craft and the thoughts she puts behind her choice of words.

Words are important to my grandmother. You will never find her desk without one of her favorite books – the dictionary. Her thirst for knowledge and perfection in language is second to none. She crafts each word and sentence like a maestro with the musical notes. Her artistry shines through each letter and word. It is transcending and everlasting. And I feel honored to be blessed with many of her works.

She also gave us our names. Each character she chose came with the highest aspiration. Mum said she even thought that by giving us one character names instead of the usual two, we could have an advantage in life. For example, in exams, we would finish our name quicker and therefore have more time for answering all the questions! Although I can testify most of my exam results fall well short of her high standards, I have nevertheless always enjoyed my name and I hope I will be able to live up to it one day.

I am lucky to have all these letters from you. I will forever treasure them, and pass them on to my children and grandchildren. I want them to know what a great woman you are, and I want them to find inspiration and integrity in their lives just like the way you have lived yours.

I miss you so much, but I know I will always have your letters and your words with me. Reading them transports me right next to you. They are the best gift you have given me. With your letters and words, you are forever in my heart.
