When you look down at the earth from the sky, the first thing that catches one’s eye is the continuous row of mountains that lie along the island’s axis. These mountains not only serve as natural barriers, but also as water sources, and many of Yilan’s ethnic groups look upon them as their ancestral places. Mt. Ta-pa-chien under the brush of Chen Tung-Yuan displays its full magnificence and vigor, but scattered among the surrounding mountains are lakes, which bring a romantic and poetic imagination to this rugged, mountainous area. The mountains in Chou Cheng’s paintings extend infinitely into the distance, and the clouds and mists between them show their quietness and ethereality. A breeze caresses the lake, and the reflections of willow catkins and pale pink cherry blossoms on the shore add a sense of elegance and beauty. The splash of Lo Fong’s waterfall invites viewers into the scene, not only to enjoy the natural scenery but also to engage in a spiritual dialogue with nature.
The climate on wondrously beautiful Mt. Ta-pa-chien changes constantly, in countless ways. Mt. Ta-pa-chien and its smaller partner Hsiao-pa-chien tower over the surrounding peaks. The natural beauty of the way in which the clouds drape around it has made it a scenic landmark. Reaching an elevation of 3,492 m, it straddles Hsinchu, Miaoli, Yilan, and Taichung Counties. It has been called the “peak of the century.” The Atayal call it Babo Papak, with Babo meaning “mountain” and Papak meaning “two ears.” Its shape is like that of a covered wine jar, so it is also nicknamed “Winejar Mountain.” The Atayal regard it as sacred. Mt. Ta-pa-chien has the greatest personality among the peaks of Taiwan’s Hsueh-shan Range, and it is the most distinctive. It’s especially impressive if you see it in the chill air of winter, when you hear the soughing wind and see the floating clouds around it.
